1126   100 Christian Books that Changed the Century,  Peterson & Peterson $12.99  $11.69

Readers can explore the twentieth century's most influential works—writings that literally molded the mindset of evangelical believers. The authors' top picks will surprise, educate, and inspire readers. From Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery to Oswald Chambers's My Utmost for His Highest, William Barclay's The Daily Study Bible to C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, this volume's broad scope offers a unique perspective on how one hundred years of Christian culture were shaped. Engaging reviews of dozens of books, including author information and the history and significance of each work, make this resource a wonderful addition to readers' personal libraries, as well as a helpful guide for pastors, librarians, teachers, speakers, and history buffs.

402     7000 Shall Remain,   VanderJagt   $12.95   $11.66

Addresses important topics of early Church history.

2690  A Handful of Pebbles, the History of Theological Liberalism,  Barnes, Peter $10.00    $9.00

At first sight the word "liberalism" does not seem threatening in any way. However, there is something quite sinister about "theological liberalism"; although not a well-defined term, it usually refers to a belief system which rejects the orthodox view of the Christian faith as set out in the Bible, and summarized in the church's historic creeds and confessions. This book traces the origin and development of theological liberalism and convincingly demonstrates what a dangerous and destructive thing it is to the Christian church. The author shows that a battle continues to rage today, not between two varieties of true Christianity, but between truth and error, light and darkness, good and evil.

1202   A Watered Garden,    Hoeksema, G.   net item  $7.00 *

This book had its beginnings in the mid 1980's when the late Professor Homer C. Hoeksema was asked to write a comprehensive history of the seventy-year-old denomination of the Protestant Reformed Churches. He and his wife Gertrude started research in this project and developed an extensive outline. They realized that the history of a denomination is molded by its adherence to the Scriptural beliefs and doctrines of that denomination. Especially one Scriptural concept serves as a guideline for this history: the organic growth and development of God's church as He calls and guides it throughout history. As the Scriptures use the growth of a garden to picture the church, so the author uses the watered garden as the theme for this history.

1131   Church History,    Keizer, P.K.   $11.90   $10.71

An excellent resource that neither overloads the reader nor skips over anything important. The writing is interesting and from a solidly Reformed Protestant viewpoint, and does the reader the great service of distilling the lives and teachings of many important people in a form he can remember.

2174  Christian Leaders of 18th Century,  Ryle, J. C.   $12.00   $10.80

Although much has been written on the evangelical revival of the 18th century, J. C. Ryle's account remains the best popular introduction to this great spiritual era. With simplicity and vigor, he traces the lives of the eleven Christian leaders who 'shook England from one end to another', giving strong reasons for his belief "that excepting Luther and his Continental contemporaries, and our own martyred Reformers, the world has seen no such men since the days of the apostles.”

941    Christianity and Neo-liberalism,   Elliot, Paul    $19.95   $17.96

This book documents the descent of a conservative Presbyterian denomination into the grip of false teaching during the last thirty years. But as the author demonstrates, this is not an isolated case: No present-day church, denominational or independent, is immune to such dangers. Drawing striking parallels to past events in church history it describes how false teachers make their inroads, and what the Bible says Christians must do to recognize and confront them. It concludes with a strong call for submission to the unique authority of the Bible in the church.

2297   Clark-VanTil Controversy,   Hoeksema, H.   $9.95   $8.96

This book is a series of editorials written at the time of the so-called Clark-Van Til controversy in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in the mid-1940’s. The essays are some of the best analyses of its meaning in print, written by the editor of the Standard Bearer. Far from being a sideshow, and far from being dead, the assault on the doctrines of Scripture by the faculty of Westminster Seminary determined the path that the Seminary, and to some extent, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, would follow for the remainder of the century.

2355   Concise History of Christian Thought,    Lane, Tony   $19.99   $17.99

This book offers a succinct, readable survey of key Christian thinkers and significant theological developments from the church's inception to the present. In addition to surveying over one hundred important Christian thinkers from Justin Martyr to Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), the book also covers major creeds, councils, and documents. Representative extracts allow the reader to hear from each of the key thinkers in his or her own words.

2470   Dictionary of Early Christians, Biographical ref. guide 800+ people

              of the first 6 centuries   $17.97   $16.17 *

1139   Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs,   Bercot, David   $19.97   $17.97 *

Interest in the ways of the early church has never been more intense. Now, a unique dictionary has been developed to furnish ready answers to these questions and others like them. Bercot has painstakingly combed the writings of these early Christian leaders and categorized the heart of their thinking into more than 700 theological, moral, and historical topics to create this book. This resource offers a window into the world of the early church and affords a special opportunity to examine topically the thoughts of men like Clement of Rome, Ignatius, and Polycarp, who were students of the original apostles, as well as the thoughts of other great lights in the life of the early church such as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian.

1145   EusebiusThe Church  History;  Maier, Paul   $15.99   $14.39 *

Often called the "Father of Church History," Eusebius was the first to trace the rise of Christianity during its crucial first three centuries from Christ to Constantine. Our principal resource for earliest Christianity, this presents a panorama of apostles, church fathers, emperors, bishops, heroes, heretics, confessors, and martyrs. This edition includes Paul L. Maier's clear and precise translation, historical commentary on each book in The Church History, and numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs.

1146   Evangelicalism Divided,  Murray, I.$21.50   $19.35

Has the influence of the ecumenical movement weakened evangelicalism over the past 50 years? Focusing on high-profile evangelical personalities, institutions, and publications, Murray's detailed historical overview shows how the new policy of accommodation has involved concessions that have seriously eroded biblical Christianity. His thought-provoking narrative will help you put this vital issue into perspective.

503    Evangelism in Established Churches,  Kortering, Jason   Net item   $5.50

These books, published by First PRC of Grand Rapids, MI, are a compilation of a series of Standard Bearer articles on the topic of evangelism.

101   Expository Genius John Calvin,   Lawson, S.   $15.00   $13.50 *

Dr. Steven J. Lawson delves into the practices, commitments, and techniques that made John Calvin, the great Reformer of the sixteenth century, such an effective preacher during his long pastorate at Saint Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Lawson identifies thirty-two distinctives of Calvin s preaching, providing comments from Calvin s writings, quotations from Reformation scholars, and examples from Calvin s own sermons to reinforce his points. In the end, Dr. Lawson finds in Calvin a strong model for expository preaching and calls on modern pastors to follow the Reformer's example.

1734   Foxe's Book of Martyrs,   Foxe, J.   $6.99   $6.29

Foxe’s Book of Martyrs is an apocalyptically oriented English Protestant account of the persecutions of Protestants, mainly in England, and other groups from former centuries who were seen by Foxe and others of his contemporaries to be forerunners of the Protestant Reformation through whom the lineage of the Church of England could be traced. With millions of copies in print, Foxe's Book of Martyrs has become a classic of magnificent courage and faith. Beginning with Jesus Christ, this unparalleled volume traces the roots of religious persecution. Some of the heroic figures examined are John Hus, John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Anne Askew, Lady Jane Grey, and Martin Luther.

1157   Grace and Glory Days,    Boslooper, T.   $7.44   $6.70

There is finally a written record of a very critical period in early twentieth century Reformed Church history. During the close of the decade of the 1920s, three Reformed Church ministers adopted Fundamentalism as the primary mode of their style of ministry and the prime vehicle for their theology in reference to eschatology. These pastors left their churches and founded independent congregations. Their ideas and defection from their denominations caused a considerable divisiveness and a loss of members especially in the Reformed Church in America.

1161   History of Christianity in the U.S.,    Noll, M.   $29.96   $26.96

Author Mark Noll presents the unfolding drama of American Christianity with accuracy and skill, from the first European settlements to ecumenism in the late 20th Century. This work has become a standard in the field of North American religious history. Though dealing with all denominations, it is centered on the rise and decline of Protestant dominance in the United States. Starting from colonial pluralism, Noll shows how Christianity was Americanized by the "great awakening," the Revolution, and other influences.

333    John Calvin and His Passion,   Piper, John   $7.99   $7.19

God rests all too lightly on the church's mind in our time. Consequently, the self-saturation of His people has made God and His glory auxiliary, and His majesty has all but disappeared from the modern evangelical world. John Calvin saw a similar thing in his day, and it was at the root of his quarrel with Rome. Nothing mattered more to Calvin than the centrality, supremacy, and majesty of the glory of God. "The essential meaning of Calvin's life and preaching," writes John Piper, "is that he recovered and embodied a passion for the absolute reality and majesty of God. Such is the aim and burden of this book as well." As Piper concisely unfolds this predominant theme in Calvin's life, he seeks to fire every Christian's passion for the centrality and supremacy of God.

2473   Josephus, The Essential Works,   Maier, Paul   $15.99   $14.39 *

Next to the Bible, Josephus' description of the people and events in the Old and New Testaments are the most authoritative ancient source yet sometimes the most difficult to understand. The Jewish Antiquities and The Jewish War of Josephus take on a brilliant new dimension in this revised edition of the award-winning translation and condensation that boasts ninety-one full-color photos, 21 maps and charts, and 19 insightful sidebar discussions. All of this helps to bring the biblical world to life.

1170   Liberty of Conscience, History of the Puritan Idea,  VanTil, L.J.   $9.99   $8.99

Hardly a day passes in which we don't hear a news story involving freedom of expression or freedom of religion. What limits, if any, should there be on actions flowing from personal convictions? And who should set those limits? In this volume the author traces the development of liberty of conscience from the English Puritan William Perkins to the First Amendment two hundred years later. The author shows how liberty of conscience became a fundamental idea in the American mind and why it remains such an important issue today.

428    New & Complete Works of Josephus,   Whiston, W.   $24.99   $22.49 *

2113   New & Complete Works of Josephus,   Whiston, W  paperback  $19.99   $17.99

2370  New Foxes Book of Martyrs,   Foxe, John  revised ed.   $13.99   $12.59

In 1563, John Foxe began a memorial of martyrs starting with Stephen, the first to die for the cause of Christ, and ending with the most recent martyrs of his day. He knew that dangers lay in forgetting the martyrs--in being insensitive to their struggles. Martyrdom is not a thing of the past; every day the Christian church is persecuted in countries all over the world. More Christians were afflicted in the twentieth century then all the past centuries combined. If the Church is not reminded of the cost to follow Christ, she will die. This updated version includes reports on modern martyrs of the 20th and 21st century, a full color timeline of selected events and people for historical reference, and has been carefully edited into Modern American English for today's reader.

2310  Not Reformed At All, Resurgence of Medieval Tradition, Robbins & Gerety  $9.95  $8.96

This is a thorough, systematic, logical, Scriptural, and confessional refutation of Douglas Wilson’s book, Reformed is Not Enough. It is also an excellent exposition and defense of the true gospel of Jesus Christ and will renew the readers in their convictions with respect to salvation by faith alone as taught in the word of God.  currently unavailable

934    Puritan Profiles,    Barker    $22.99   $20.69 *

For those who admire the confessional statements (of the Westminster Assembly) but know little of their origins, this is a wonderful introductory volume. The diversity of the assembly participants with their immense commonalities is amazing. Also of interest are the enormous energy involved in the debates, the participants' struggles to understand the Bible, and their freedom to vent disagreement at high decibels while maintaining a spirit of unity.

985    Reformation Sketches,   Godfrey, Robert   $10.99   $9.89.

The sketches in this book strive to show that the Reformation remains vitally important for Christians today. Reformers and preachers of the sixteenth century were the best educated, most godly, and most faithful group of leaders the church has ever seen. In a remarkable way they combined commitment, learning, and orthodoxy. In this book, Martin Luther and John Calvin received most of Godfrey's attention, but he also treats Philip Melanchthon, Peter Martyr Vermigli, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dort.

1188  Schilder's Struggle for the Unity of the Church,  VanReest, R.  $26.60   $23.94

Dutch Reformed theologian Klaas Schilder (1890-1952) is remembered both for his courageous stand in opposition to Nazism, which led to his imprisonment three months after the Nazis overran the Netherlands in 1940, and for his role in the unity struggle, which culminated in 1944 with his deposition, the suspension of scores of office-bearers and the re-formation of the liberated Reformed Churches.

1584   Son of Secession,    VanderWerp, D. J.   $25.00   $22.50

Son of Secession is a challenge to our understanding of the historical origins of the Christian Reformed Church as well as the church today. Sheeres has written a moving, sympathetic, and exciting biography of Douwe Vander Werp, one of the key figures in the Netherlands Afscheiding of 1834 and a principal minister in the early development of the Christian Reformed Church. Credited with having founded ten congregations, Vander Werp was a man zealously committed to his understanding of God’s Word and its implications for his life, even when it required the painful sacrifice of three secessions.

1582  Wide as the Waters,   Bobrick, B.    $16.00    $14.40

~ story of the English Bible and the revolution it inspired

Next to the Bible itself, the English Bible was—and is—the most influential book ever published. The most famous of all English Bibles, the King James Version was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators, from John Wycliffe to the committee of scholars who collaborated on the King James translation. Wide as the Waters examines the life and work of Wycliffe and recounts the tribulations of his successors, including William Tyndale, Miles Coverdale, and others who came to bitter ends, as well as the fifty-four scholars from Oxford and Cambridge who crafted the King James Version of the Bible. Wide as the Waters is a story about a crucial epoch in the development of Christianity, about the English language and society, and about a book that changed the course of history.
